for updated lists of all years go music and movies.
End of year awards

FILM
first, some thoughts:

  • nothing really stood out as the best film of the year for me. there were some solid films and some films that said plenty about society (queen of versailles, dark knight rises, arbitrage) or human nature (flight, broke), but nothing that stood out as exemplary and worthy of the number one spot.
  • as usual, twilight brings up the rear. i'm glad the overwrought and silly series is finally done taking money from little girls and their parents. it's a blight on society in every way and to see it end ranks as one of the highlights of society in 2012.
  • last year was a good year for women, this year wasn't.
  • didn't watch as many movies as usual, but tv filled the void. fitting because it's pretty obvious at this point that popular tv is better than popular film
